SET DICKENS TO MUSIC.
When Frank Johnson, 45-years-old clerk leaves his desk at D.G.M.O. Manchester
(Victoria), he becomes Frank Johnson the noted local composer and musician
and Musical Director of the Alderley and Wilmslow Operatic Society. But when
he composes-his latest effort is a 125-page score for an operatic version of
Dickens' "Christmas Carol -he doesn't settle down in a quiet study surrounded
by busts of great musicians, he works on his morning and evening train
journeys between Wilmslow and Manchester. "There just isn't time, otherwise,"
he explains. The premiere of "Christmas Carol," which took place just before
Christmas, was a great success and the theme handled by Mr. Johnson with
considerable originality. In composing his music, the first full-scale
musical version of" Christmas Carol" ever written, he provided for a ballet
which was produced by local ballerina Enid Owen. Mr. Johnson conducted the
orchestra himself and at the end of the show received a great ovation. Latest
report is that the B.B.C. are interested in making a recording of his
compositions.
CREWE LADIES' NIGHT.
Mr. R. A. Riddles, member of the Railway Executive, met many of his L.M.R.
friends at the Crewe Works Supervisory Staff Association's Annual Ladies'
Night at Crewe Town Hall. Present with their wives were Mr. W. B. Shelton
(Div. 0.S.), Mr. I. C. Forsyth (Works Supt.), Mr. F. Shaw (Chief Foreman
Erecting Shop), Mr. I. Brownridge (Chief Foreman Machine Shop), Mr. T. Leeson,

VANMAN AMBASSADOR.
"The courtesy, attention and willingness to help of your Motor Vanman A.
Coniam has been outstanding, and in our view he is a great ambassador for
British Railways," writes a Wembley firm to the D.G.M., Broad Street. Albert
Coniam, 65-years-old and a railwayman for 49 years, may be a cog in a large
machine, but he is a mighty efficient one and his importance is shown by the
impression he has created with the Wembley firm. Goodwill means more traffic.
50 YEARS A SALESMAN
For 41 years a railway transport salesman, Mr. Hugo Nickson of British
Railway's London Commercial Office, Aldersgate, made himself popular with
executives of scores of important London firms. Now he has retired after half
a century on the railway.
"Nick" comes of railway stock his father was West Coast Traffic Agent of the
L.N.W.R. (retired 1913), and his son is in the D.G.M.O., Broad Street.
The first railway salesman to use a typewriter, "Nick" remembers when all
documents were laboriously written by hand and when the fierce competition
between railway companies made the salesmen enthusiastic business rivals.
SIX MILLION PARCELS
Retiring recently 75-years-old Leading Parcel Porter George Rowland, hearty
patriarch of three generations of railway-men, sorted his last parcel and
joined his son, 42-years-old Signalman John Rowland of Brent, and his
grandson, Motor Van Driver George Nash, 25, who works with him at St. Pancras
Parcel Depot, in a little farewell celebration.
George had been at St. Pancras as a Vanman and Parcel Porter for nearly 60
years (a rail service record) and has dealt with over 6,000,000 parcels.
His most exciting consignments? A three foot snake that slithered out of a
parcel he was loading and a wolf hound that broke loose in a vanload of hams
sampling every one before it was recaptured.

He joined the former Cleator and Workington Railway in 1907 and emigrated to
Canada in 1911. Until 1913, when Sam returned to England to join the L.N.W.
and Furness Joint Line, he worked on the C.P.R. in the Winnipeg Control
Office. Later he served as a signalman at Clintz Quarry, Parkside and
Beattock and twice signalled the Royal train of King George V.

was made in the presence of Mr. M.Saunders, D.O.S., Rugby, by Station Master
H. A. Went of Coventry.
RETIREMENT SHORTS
Retiring after 38 years' service, Signalman G. Woodhead of Crigglestone

all his service at Derby.

were present to congratulate him and to welcome Mr. W. F. P. Thompson who
succeeds Mr. Martin as Asst. D.O.S., Preston. See picture above.

COVENTRY SOCIAL
Presentations to five of the staff who had reached the age of 65 were a
feature of a recent social evening arranged by members of the Coventry Goods
& Cartage Social Fund at the Coventry Railwaymen's Club. A presentation was
also made to Mr. P. Elson for his services to the fund.
The five veterans honoured were Road Motor Driver Mason (42 years' service),

(27 years) and Porter T. A. Flowers (33 years).
Mr. Brittlebank the D.G.M., Birmingham, was represented by Mr. Pyett who made
the presentations and the chair was taken by Mr. H. N. Wilson, the Goods
Agent, Coventry.

Nigerian Railwayman Willie Onobanjo, attached to the L.M.R. for training
purposes, was one of 50 members of the Rowsley M.I.C. who gathered recently
to present an easy chair and a bookcase to Inspector Charles Brown of Derby
in recognition of his services to the class.
He was among the speakers at the meeting who thanked Inspector Brown for his
instruction which had helped so many firemen to pass out as drivers.
